John A. (Jay) Johnson
Pampa High School Class of 1969
John A. (Jay) Johnson is a 1969 graduate of Pampa High School. He is the son of H.J. and Evelyn Johnson. His parents also are graduates of Pampa High School, and both are retirees of Cabot Corporation. Dr. Johnson is the only son among their four children.
Dr. Johnson was a first-grader at Stephen F. Austin Elementary School the year it opened. He attended Robert E. Lee Junior High School, serving as mayor and was chosen Best All-Round Boy his freshman year. In high school, he played baseball, basketball and football, serving as co-captain of the football team his senior year. Dr. Johnson was a member of the National Honor Society his junior and senior years. As a senior, he served as student body vice president and was chosen All-School Favorite Boy. He graduated in 1969 and was awarded a four-year scholarship from Cabot.
Dr. Johnson attended Texas Tech University, receiving a degree in zoology with a minor in chemistry. He was accepted to Baylor College of Dentistry, graduating with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1976. In 1974, Dr. Johnson married his high school sweetheart, Linda. They have two married daughters and three grandchildren. Since opening his dental practice in 1976, Dr. Johnson has served the Pampa area in various positions. He served two terms on the Pampa Planning and Zoning Commission and one term on the Pampa City Commission. He is currently in his 12th year as a trustee of the Pampa Independent School District, having served as president for two years. He has been active on the Pampa Youth and Community Center board since 1982 and has been PYCC president since 2008.
Dr. Johnson has been a member of the Pampa Lions Club since 1977. He has held most offices, including “Boss Lion” and “Lion of the Year” twice. He was awarded the “Jack Weich Fellow” for his support of the Texas Lions’ Children’s Camp in Kerrville. He also is a founding member of the Pampa Education Foundation and serves on both the Pampa-Gray and the M.K.Brown Foundations.
His dental office conducts an annual “Candy Buy Back” each Halloween and sends the candy to U.S. troops in combat areas. His office also sponsors an “Extreme Smile Makeover” to benefit deserving individuals in the Pampa area. He and his wife award an annual scholarship to a PHS graduate in honor of his parents. Dr. Johnson is active in First Baptist Church, where he taught 12th Grade Sunday school for 23 years and is currently director of a young adult department. He serves as a deacon and has been chairman of the deacon body twice. He is a member of Gideon’s International and is on the board of directors of “Word for the World Ministries,” a radio ministry based in Katy, Texas.
Professionally, Dr. Johnson has held various offices, including president of the Panhandle District Dental Society, PDDS board of directors and a member of the District Dental Society’s Peer Review Committee. He is a past board member of the Baylor College of Dentistry Century Club. He is affiliated with the Texas and Panhandle Academy of General Dentistry, Texas Dental Association, American Dental Association and the American Orthodontic Society. Dr. Johnson was selected by the Pampa News readers as “Best Dentist in Gray County” in 2010. He was nominated by the Panhandle Academy of General Dentistry for Texas Dentist of the Year in 2005. He will be inducted into the American College of Dentists in New Orleans in October 2013.
